S.C. at their 2019 Annual Meeting. This amount far outpaces last year\u2019s total of $4,100![\/box]<\/p>\n<p>You might have had a pink piggy bank when you were a kid. But did you manage to stuff it with $12,000 &#8211; and then give every penny away? Through their signature &#8220;Pay the Pig&#8221; fundraiser, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsae.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georgia Society of Executives (GSAE)<\/a><\/strong> has raised more than $12,000 since 2015 for charities beloved by the cities that host their annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GSAE-Pay-the-Pig-logo-285x300.png\" alt=\"GSAE Pay the Pig logo\" width=\"285\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GSAE-Pay-the-Pig-logo-285x300.png 285w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GSAE-Pay-the-Pig-logo-768x808.png 768w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GSAE-Pay-the-Pig-logo.png 950w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/>Pay the Pig is a raffle held every year during GSAE&#8217;s annual meeting. The raffle is as straightforward as it sounds: Attendees purchase tickets for $5 each or six for $25. All tickets are put into a bowl. One winning ticket is drawn at the end of the event. One attendee goes home with a fabulous prize. All proceeds go to a local charity.<\/p>\n<p>How did such a simple, lucrative fundraiser begin? And why is it so successful?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWendy (Kavanagh) and I were in Charleston in the spring of 2015 doing a site visit for that year\u2019s GSAE Annual Meeting,\u201d said Lori Spear, CAE, former GSAE staff and board chair. \u201cWe passed a boutique with shiny, decorative pigs in the window. They were so cute that we wanted to use them in some way. We had the spur-of-the-moment idea to do a piggy bank-themed raffle that we\u2019d call \u2018Pay the Pig.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a prize sponsored by the Charleston CVB, Spear and two others sold $2,300 worth of raffle tickets that year simply by walking around the meeting and asking attendees to pay the pig and support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/musckids.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MUSC Children\u2019s Medical Center<\/strong><\/a>, a Charleston children&#8217;s hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiving back to host cities is a crucial part of GSAE\u2019s annual meeting,\u201d Kavanagh, CAE, explained. \u201cAs association professionals, we all host meetings for our members so we know how much work goes into it \u2013 both on our part and on behalf of the host city. So it&#8217;s nice to recognize host cities for their work supporting us,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>GSAE\u2019s Annual Meeting is held in a different city each year. Their staff works with their host hotel and the host city\u2019s convention and visitors&#8217; bureau to select a local organization to receive the funds.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/breadforlifeathens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bread for Life<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Athens, Ga.),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/loavesandfishesmacon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Loaves &amp; Fishes Ministry<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Macon, Ga.), and the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandestin.com\/blog\/post\/making-difference-one-child-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sandestin Foundation for Kids<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Sandestin, Fla.) have all received Pay the Pig dividends.<\/p>\n<p>The prizes are good, Spear emphasized. \u201cOne year we raffled off a big screen TV; another year it was two airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S. We\u2019ve been lucky to always have a sponsor that provides big-ticket items people want to win,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8770\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8770\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/Pay-the-Pig-Winner-GSAE.jpg\" alt=\"GSAE members participate in the Pay the Pig raffle because of the big prize incentive but also because they know that host cities invest a lot of effort in association meetings, and they want to give back in a meaningful way.\" width=\"640\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/Pay-the-Pig-Winner-GSAE.jpg 966w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/Pay-the-Pig-Winner-GSAE-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/Pay-the-Pig-Winner-GSAE-768x456.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>GSAE members participate in the Pay the Pig raffle because of the big prize incentive but also because they know that host cities invest a lot of effort in association meetings, and they want to give back in a meaningful way.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Spear and five to six volunteers sell raffle tickets using Square devices plugged into their smartphones. They accept cash as well, \u201cbut I think people are more likely to buy more tickets with using a card,\u201d Spear added.<\/p>\n<p>Spear&#8217;s volunteer team flexes some serious social muscle to bring home the bacon for that charity, too. Over the years, Pay the Pig\u2019s volunteer army has refined their sales tactics and grown more on point with their branding. After the inaugural year, the team started buying pink tickets to match the pig theme. Some volunteers announce their role by wearing branded aprons. Spear wears a boa of pink tickets draped around her neck the entire meeting as a visual reminder that anyone can buy tickets at any time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPay the Pig is about getting everyone engaged and giving back, and the price point is low enough that it&#8217;s easy to get people to participate,\u201d Spear said. \u201cIt&#8217;s accessible and affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Pay the Pig is usually conducted during GSAE\u2019s annual meeting, the association has held a smaller version of the fundraiser a couple times during its holiday luncheon to benefit Toys for Tots. \u201cOne year, I bought pink and white striped gift bags to set on each table. During the program, without initially saying what it was for, I asked everyone to get out their wallet \u2013 and they did. And Pay the Pig was this spur-of-the-moment idea born from wanting to use cute pigs in some way, but also from a desire to answer the question, how do we give back to a very specific community that supports us? How do we give back in a way they truly need? Their annual meeting will be held in Greenville, S.C., at The Westin Poinsett Hotel Greenville, and the Greenville CVB have requested that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/upstatebusinessjournal.com\/ones-watch-matt-reeves-director-frazee-dream-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Frazee Dream Center<\/a><\/strong>, a free preschool, after school and summer program for under-resourced children in downtown Greenville, receive the money raised from Pay the Pig.<\/p>\n<p>Because wearing Pay the Pig ribbons have become a mark of pride among GSAE members, Kavanagh and Spear are optimistic that they&#8217;ll meet their fundraising goal.
