The results are in:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7454 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/11\/AA-2017-More-Staff-or-Money-BAR-1024x496.png\" alt=\"More staff or more money for membership marketing?\" width=\"620\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By a slim majority, readers responded that they\u2019d rather have a larger budget for membership marketing. With so many online and print tools available for free or a scalable cost, marketing to a large target audience doesn\u2019t require as large a staff as it might have decades ago when the main vehicles for reaching people were printed communications, telephone or face-to-face interactions \u2013 all of which are still effective but require more manpower than the many digital channels available to marketing professionals today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d definitely prefer to have more money to execute a membership marketing plan,\u201d said Christina McCoy, CAE, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manageassociations.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>AMPED Association Management<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cMore budget allows you to get creative and explore more with what the marketing plan can look like. It\u2019s also easier to add money than to add staff,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlus, it\u2019s common for membership marketing to be put on the back burner when it comes to budgeting,\u201d McCoy added. \u201cAssociations tend to see membership marketing as finding new members, but it\u2019s also about retaining current members, and that requires money and effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A report from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketinggeneral.com\/knowledge-bank\/reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Marketing General Incorporated<\/strong><\/a> gives a slightly different answer than our poll results. While both \u201cinsufficient staff\u201d and \u201cinsufficient budget\u201d ranked among the top three self-reported internal challenges to growing membership, more individual-based (professional) and trade association staff members stated that they face membership marketing issues related to staff needs (30 percent overall) than budget needs (16 percent overall).<\/p>\n<p>However, the marketing professionals surveyed seem to be making smart use of the resources and tools they do have. The survey\u2019s 1,170 participants said they use a variety of digital marketing tools, such as association-sponsored social networking sites, search engine marketing, and lead generation content (white papers, downloadable eBooks, etc.) to bring in new members. The report includes an interesting look at the biggest external factors affecting membership growth as well. It\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketinggeneral.com\/knowledge-bank\/reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>worth a look<\/strong><\/a> if you have some time.<\/p>\n<p>But neither staff nor budget needs ranked first among membership marketing professionals: That honor goes to difficulty in communicating value or benefits of membership, which is the same challenge that unseated \u201ccutting through information clutter\u201d in our seventh annual <a href=\"https:\/\/communicationsbenchmark.naylor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Association Communications Benchmarking Study<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in our study, like the one from MGI, say they try to be prudent about their communication department budgets by improving their use of existing tools like social media and video rather than risk making a bad investment of staff time and money in new communication vehicles or mobile strategies:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>If your publishing\/content creation team unexpectedly received a 50 percent increase in annual budget, how would you recommend they spend it?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7455\" style=\"width: 897px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7455 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/11\/2017-Benchmarking-chart-about-budget-priorities.png\" alt=\"2017 Benchmarking chart about membership marketing budget priorities\" width=\"897\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source: 2017 Association Communications Benchmarking Survey<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Do you agree with these results?
