The same members tell us they never know about events, professional development opportunities or other benefits to which they\u2019re entitled. If this sounds like your organization, you\u2019re not alone. For the fifth consecutive year, the majority of association leaders (68 percent) cited \u201cInability to Communicate Member Benefits Effectively<strong>\u201d <\/strong>as their second most significant member communication challenge, trailing only information overload (69 percent). These findings from Naylor\u2019s annual <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/benchmarking\" target=\"_blank\"><u>association communication benchmarking study<\/u><\/a><\/strong> also revealed that \u201cDifficulty Engaging Young Professionals<strong>\u201d <\/strong>(56 percent) is now the third most frequently cited challenge, up from No. 4 in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than folding up the tent on the membership association model, however, many high-performing organizations are rethinking their brands and their business models. And guess what? Some longstanding tactics and communication channels remain part of the future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2502 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/Tweetables-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Tweetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"65\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a disconnect between why young members join and why associations THINK they join.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/v4iqm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3157 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/08\/LilTweetablesSmall.png\" alt=\"LilTweetablesSmall\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Renewal numbers will increase if you provide valuable training and professional development that members can\u2019t easily find elsewhere.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/dGOm6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3157 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/08\/LilTweetablesSmall.png\" alt=\"LilTweetablesSmall\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mentoring programs benefit members at all career stages. But programs must be diligently managed.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/PaEed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3157 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/08\/LilTweetablesSmall.png\" alt=\"LilTweetablesSmall\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><br \/>\nThe value of face-to-face interaction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Carl Good<\/strong>, vice president of membership, marketing and business development at the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrca.net\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Roofing Contractors Association<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (NRCA), said <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tv.associationadviser.com\/face-to-face-interaction-is-valuable\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>face-to-face interaction with an association is still highly valuable for members<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. \u201cIn our industry our members are going from 5 a.m. until late at night during their busy season. They miss a lot of things that we send them through the mail or electronically and they don\u2019t have time to visit our website unless they\u2019re looking for something specific. While that may not surprise you, did you know that 23 percent of associations tell us they are inviting younger members to join their event planning committees? These tactics eclipsed the number of associations that are cultivating a social media presence during their live events (19 percent), offering awards for young professionals (16 percent) or offering separate educational tracks for young professionals (10 percent).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6207\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/AA-July-2016-Attract-Younger-Industry-Graph-620x330px.jpg\" alt=\"AA-July-2016-Attract-Younger-Industry-Graph-620x330px\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/AA-July-2016-Attract-Younger-Industry-Graph-620x330px.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/AA-July-2016-Attract-Younger-Industry-Graph-620x330px-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t very often give millennials the mic and ask them directly, \u2018what\u2019s important to you in life?\u2019\u201d observed <strong>Patrick Leclerc, <\/strong>president &amp; CEO of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cutaactu.ca\/\">Canadian Urban Transit Association<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, which has a number of tracks and events for young transit professionals at its conferences. \u201cWe don\u2019t ask them often enough: \u2019What do you expect in the workplace? How do you move around your community and what do want your community to look like?\u2019 That\u2019s what attendees and policy makers need to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NCRA\u2019s Good recalled a time 10 years ago when his leadership team thought trade shows were a dying breed. Instead, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tv.associationadviser.com\/face-to-face-interaction-is-valuable\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>NCRA has found the opposite to be true<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. \u201cThere\u2019s just something you get from having that interaction with somebody else who\u2019s in your industry and can talk the same language that you talk. That is what [members] tell us is one of the most important benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A helping hand for newer (most at risk) members most at risk<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>New data from Edge Research, commissioned by Abila, Inc., showed a significant disconnect between the reasons young people join associations and the reasons associations THINK young people join. In response, NRCA hired a membership experience coordinator who calls new members after they join, gets them registered for NRCA\u2019s website and electronic newsletters and generally stays in regular contact with them every three months during the critical first year of membership. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a welcome call. It\u2019s to remind them: \u2018Hey, we\u2019re here for you. We have a lot of benefits you may be interested in,\u2019\u201d he says, including technical details they can put into proposals and other benefits they wouldn\u2019t immediately recognize.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Randy<\/strong> <strong>Fiser<\/strong>, CEO of the American Society of Interior Designers, said that before a live event, ASID <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tv.associationadviser.com\/encourage-younger-members-to-attend-events\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>gives young members a guided tour of the trade show<\/strong><\/a><\/span> so they can \u201cexperience from a seasoned professional what they should be looking for in their conversations with vendors who are showcasing their work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Re-thinking your brand<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After 60 years as the Midwest Society of Association Executives, the Society recently rebranded itself as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.associationsnorth.com\"><strong>Associations North<\/strong><\/a><\/span> to better reflect its \u201cdedication and commitment to <em>Moving Professionals Forward\u201d <\/em>explained by the organization\u2019s 2016-17 chair, Ann Kvaal.<\/p>\n<p>According to Association North\u2019s marketing and communications manager, <strong>Angela Kisskeys<\/strong>, \u201cwe want a brand that is relevant, meaningful and easy to understand. The simplicity and brevity in the name is necessary to remaining relevant in the marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>For more about Association North&#8217;s\u00a0rebranding effort, read our interview with Kisskeys:\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/associations-north\"><strong>Luggage Tags and Breath Mints<\/strong><\/a><\/span><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tactics for engaging\u00a0millennials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Re-branding isn\u2019t the only way to connect with millennials. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/benchmarking\" target=\"_blank\">Association Adviser\u2019s annual benchmarking study<\/a><\/strong><\/span> found that inviting young members to participate on volunteer committees (54 percent), gearing events toward young professional education and development (53 percent) and creating communications targeted to younger members (41 percent) are now the most frequently used tactics for connecting with up-and-coming members of their industry profession, more so than mobile and social initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>You also have to sound genuine, according to <strong>Russ Webb<\/strong>, vice president of the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atl-apt.org\/\">Atlanta Apartment Association<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(AAA).\u00a0\u201cOur communications coordinator is only one year out of college. Everything we plan to send out to members and the public must go through her. If she thinks any communication piece is not going to resonate with younger members, she\u2019s quick to let us know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>See our 2016 <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/corner-office-roundtable-2016\/\"><strong><u>Corner Office roundtable<\/u><\/strong><\/a><em> for more about connecting with millennials.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, my colleague Holly Marsilio has more in today\u2019s issue about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/want-engaged-members-clean-data\/\">using big data to keep members engaged and motivated<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Helping members with their biggest challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>David Lewis<\/strong>, executive director of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aasbo.org\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona Association of School Business Officials<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0said his organization encourages members to contact AASBO any time they have a question about a business, administrative or staff training issue.\u00a0In addition to being a trusted answer source for members,<strong> Lauren Hoffmann<\/strong>, director of marketing, communications and membership for the Mid-Atlantic section of the United States Tennis Association said associations can also elevate the member experience by serving as a valued researcher and content curator for them and by helping them mine discussion forums to find fellow members with success stories to share..<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chip Rogers,<\/strong> president &amp; CEO of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aahoa.com\/\">Asian American Hotel Owners Association<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, said AAHOA holds 10 to 12 events for young professional hoteliers across the country who want to advance their professional learning beyond what they can learn from predominantly family-run businesses\u2014\u201clearning how to develop the Hyatt brand and leveling the playing field\u201d against unconventional competitors like Airbnb.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Associations uniquely positioned to close skills gaps<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many high performing associations are finding that they can earn substantial increase their renewal numbers by providing members with training, workshops, webinars and certifications that they would have trouble finding elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone is doing one particular job and they move on to another area, the school district doesn\u2019t automatically hire someone else to do that job. They just assign those tasks to somebody else who\u2019s already at the school district who must get trained in those areas as well,\u201d AASBA\u2019s Lewis noted. Making sure that the right training and workshops are readily available for the right members at the right time has been a big focus for AASBO, Lewis added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brenda Orffer<\/strong>, director of member services for the Washington Health Care Association, said her WHCA is dedicated to \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tv.associationadviser.com\/sound-bites-member-education\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>bringing education to the members rather than bringing members to the education<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u201d After successfully introducing webinars five years ago, WHCA more recently started on-site personalized education programs for members, which allows them to learn new techniques on equipment they\u2019re familiar with and not leave their facilities short-staffed like they would if they traveled off-site for training.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The many benefits of mentoring programs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/questrom\/files\/2013\/07\/Forrester-Research-Report-Drive-Employee-Talent-Development-Through-Business-Mentoring-Programs.pdf\">California Nurse Mentor Project<\/a><\/strong><\/span> study found that mentoring reduced RN attrition, saving hospitals between $1.4 million and $5.8 million over three years. Specific benefits to the organization include: reduced turnover and recruiting costs, assistance in knowledge transfer from retiring workers to new workers and help for employees to gain skills and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing more gratifying than teaching and mentoring people,\u201d Betsy Monseu, CEO of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americancoalcouncil.org\/\">American Coal Council<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(ACC) told us recently. \u201cIt\u2019s important for those in management to facilitate relationships and allow people to grow. But, it\u2019s also important for those being mentored to make the relationship mutually beneficial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AGC Georgia\u2019s Dunham agreed. \u201cI was blessed to have many veteran members willing to guide me and advise me,\u201d he said. \u201cI could call them any time up to ask a question. I also spent a lot of time riding around in their pickup trucks listening to their war stories.
