Whether you think 2015 was a good year, a bad year, or a ho-hum year, it\u2019s hard to ignore the pronounced changes that technology and innovation have had on our lives at home, at work and on the road.<\/p>\n<p><em>Wait a minute. Aren\u2019t technology and innovation the same thing? <\/em>Not necessarily, according to many of the association thought leaders we checked in with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/Tweetables-icon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2502\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/Tweetables-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Tweetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"65\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t confuse technology with innovation and vice versa.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/FR81S\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align:none wp-image-2517 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/RealLilTweetables.png\" alt=\"RealLilTweetables\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You may have cool gadgets, apps and tools, but are you using them correctly to meet member needs?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/p7E8l\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align:none wp-image-2517 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/RealLilTweetables.png\" alt=\"RealLilTweetables\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the world becomes more competitive, associations must demonstrate the value of membership.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/RTceb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align:none wp-image-2517 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/RealLilTweetables.png\" alt=\"RealLilTweetables\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our most popular tech stories of 2015 may surprise you.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/915w9\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align:none wp-image-2517 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/RealLilTweetables.png\" alt=\"RealLilTweetables\" width=\"17\" height=\"15\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Rita Chen Fujisawa<\/strong>, COO of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cahf.org\/\">California Association of Health Facilities<\/a>,\u00a0once told me that technology is not necessarily innovation, and vice versa. \u201cInnovation could be a new process or approach to solving a problem that we want to reward, not necessarily technology. Also, developing an app isn\u2019t innovative per se, unless it\u2019s in an industry that\u2019s not very tech savvy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Hood, <\/strong>CEO of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macpa.org\">Maryland Association of CPAs<\/a>, agreed that \u2018technology\u2019 and \u2018innovation\u2019 shouldn\u2019t be used interchangeably. \u201dTechnology is what it is, while innovation is a mindset and a process to bring new ways of serving members and differentiating your association from other offerings in the market.\u201d Hood also said we tend to confuse innovation with invention. Unlike an invention, which is a patentable new product or service, Hood said innovation is about \u201ccreating new value in anticipation of future industry and customer\/member trends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jodi Ray, <\/strong>account manager for <a href=\"http:\/\/blueskybroadcast.com\/\">Blue Sky Broadcast<\/a>, said that innovation is about finding the right way to make use of the right technology.\u00a0\u201cAssociations have many different technologies at their fingertips.\u00a0What\u2019s important is how they use it. Is it really meeting a member need, or streamlining an administrative process, or is it just cool to have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fara Francis, <\/strong>chief information officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agc.org\/\">The Associated General Contractors of America<\/a>, believes technology and innovation are separate concepts, but often work hand in hand. \u201cAt times technology could be quite innovative. Other times an innovative idea needs the technology to bring it to life. The smartphone is an example of innovation <em>and<\/em> technology. Think Uber\u2019s impact on the taxi industry or Airbnb\u2019s impact on hotels. For associations, Hood said disruption is about \u201cthe competition for learning, information, and even community that has been enabled by the rapid evolution of the web.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Francis<\/strong>, disruption refers to any process or technology that shocks the \u201cestablishment\u201d into adopting a new way of doing things and replacing the old way. \u201cBy the way, associations can be disruptors too, by becoming more flexible and open to change,\u201d said Francis. \u201cThe world is becoming more competitive. Associations have to demonstrate the value of membership to their constituents. It is imperative that you embrace flexibility and adaptability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blue Sky\u2019s <strong>Jodi Ray<\/strong> said associations that are willing to re-think every aspect of their operations will emerge as their industry leaders. \u201cDisruptors look at challenges with a blank slate rather than [with] preconceived notions,\u201d she said, adding that they take an \u201canything goes\u201d approach to brainstorming so they can find unique niches and capitalize on them.<\/p>\n<h4>Prepping your association for the future<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Hood<\/strong> said MACPA has hired a world-renowned futurist who teaches a \u201cscience of certainty\u201d course. It\u2019s about identifying hard trends that are likely to emerge \u2014 from technology to demographics to government regulation. \u201cIf you identify opportunities around these \u2018future facts\u2019 then your risk goes down and your future \u2018ready state\u2019 goes up,\u201d observed Hood.<\/p>\n<p>According to AGC\u2019s <strong>Francis<\/strong>, your association\u2019s IT leaders must recognize which trends are applicable to the organization \u2014 i.e., mobile, cloud and security \u2014 and which are not. \u201cFor example, if you\u2019re a health care association, then trends in cybersecurity and infrastructure security are very important to you,\u201d Francis said.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Tech\u2019s impact on professional learning and career development<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Each year, our annual <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/benchmarking\" target=\"_blank\">association communication benchmarking report<\/a><\/u> reveals that continuing education and professional development are among the hottest topics of interest for association members.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5255\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/AA-2015-Benchmarking-Topics-Most-Important-to-Association-Members-1024x363.jpeg\" alt=\"Topics Most Important to Association Members, 2011-2015\" width=\"650\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/AA-2015-Benchmarking-Topics-Most-Important-to-Association-Members-1024x363.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/AA-2015-Benchmarking-Topics-Most-Important-to-Association-Members-300x106.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/AA-2015-Benchmarking-Topics-Most-Important-to-Association-Members-768x273.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/12\/AA-2015-Benchmarking-Topics-Most-Important-to-Association-Members.jpeg 1144w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><br \/>\nAccording to <strong>Francis<\/strong>, the ability to gain CEUs and other professional development credits online continues to drive high membership value. \u201cOnline learning systems such as LMS systems are critically important to provide this value. A well-designed online learning platform that is easy to use is [now] expected by members,\u201d said Francis.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Sky\u2019s <strong>Ray<\/strong> said associations that are effectively using online learning are finding new opportunities for revenue and member engagement.\u00a0\u201cTheir partners and platforms can help them quickly and cost-effectively deliver engaging live virtual events with time-sensitive content by industry experts. Or their learners can access content on demand from any device,\u201d said Ray, who agreed with Francis that the key factors for success are ease of use and personalization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Derek Poarch<\/strong>, executive director of APCO International, said, \u201cTechnology is changing at a record pace throughout the public safety industry, so we offer members many ways to keep current with everything from next-generation 911 to cybersecurity.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apcointl.org\/training-and-certification.html\">APCO Institute<\/a> in Daytona Beach, Florida, trains over 16,000 people a year, both in-person and online. APCO holds two technology forums every year, plus a summit that\u2019s focused exclusively on broadband. Poarch said APCO is also taking the lead in making sure apps for public safety and emergency response are as safe and effective as possible, including the launch of an online app resource called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appcomm.org\">AppComm<\/a>. This allows public safety communications professional to easily download, vet and comment upon new apps.<\/p>\n<p><em>See our\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/derek-poarch\">Corner Office profile<\/a><\/u>\u00a0of Poarch for more insights.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Technology\u2019s impact on the hiring process<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Aaron Roesch, <\/strong>a recruiter for Naylor Association Solutions, believes automation and technology are leading the way in talent acquisition. \u201cIt affects everything from applicant tracking systems and screening tools and software, to automated social media job distributor tools and employee referral marketing, to HRIS systems that help onboard and manage employee data,\u201d said Roesch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian Choate,<\/strong> executive vice president of Timberlake Membership Solutions<strong>, <\/strong>observed that \u201cincreased search criteria will better define job parameters and online communities and review sites provide applicants with better insight on the prospective company\u2019s corporate culture and HR values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chip Sharkey<\/strong>, vice president of human resources, Naylor Association Solutions, agreed technology has dramatically altered and expedited the hiring process. \u201cCandidates have much more knowledge about a company than they used to. Some candidates will not apply to jobs if the process is difficult, time-consuming or cumbersome. Companies that do not move quickly will lose good candidates,\u201d added Sharkey.<\/p>\n<p><em>For more about association career trends, see <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/association-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kelly Clark\u2019s article<\/a><\/u>\u00a0about association work and hiring.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Is IT a department or a strategy?<\/h4>\n<p>According to<strong> Hood, <\/strong>tech is a \u201cpowerful enabler and accelerator\u201d of your association strategy and that strategy should drive technology, not the other way around. <strong>Ray<\/strong> agreed. \u201cAssociations should first determine their strategy and process, then find the right software to execute it. In other words, fit the tool to the problem, not the problem to the tool.\u201d\u00a0 AGC\u2019s <strong>Francis<\/strong> concurred. \u201cWhen technology is considered one of the drivers of business strategy, an organization can improve operations and revenue since technology creates the ability to generate enhanced products and services for members.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Beacons, wearables and conference mobile apps<\/h4>\n<p>According to <strong>Francis<\/strong>, associations are experiencing a vastly improved on-site conference experience with the advent of wearable technologies, mobile apps and other related gadgets. \u201cAttendees no longer have to print out schedules. They can edit their badge info online, connect with each other via the mobile apps, check in to sessions, and [take advantage of] so many other great social features. Further, exhibitors receive more value for their investments with access to analytics and other data about the conference and its attendees,\u201d said <strong>Francis<\/strong>. <strong>Hood<\/strong> agreed, saying beacons, wearables and conference mobile apps are further examples of hard trends that offer \u201ca tremendous opportunity to rethink the member experience we offer.\u201d While <strong>Ray<\/strong> lauded the people-connecting-to-people aspects of these aforementioned technologies.<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Ken Tencer<\/strong>, CEO of Sypder Works, Inc., observed in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/small-business\/sb-managing\/four-great-innovation-opportunities-that-arent-technology\/article25207445\/\">pithy post<\/a> that a lot of great companies have new, innovative ideas that go beyond the development of technology. \u201cYes, they incorporate technology in their business model, but so should we all. Most importantly, these companies understand and anticipate market trends, and find new and engaging ways to solve challenging consumer problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, try this exercise before your next off-site management gathering: Look at the paragraph above and substitute the word \u201cassociation\u201d for \u201ccompany\u201d and \u201cmember\u201d for \u201cconsumer\u201d and you\u2019ll have a leg up on your next strategic plan.
