According
\nto our latest Association Adviser <\/span>e<\/span>news<\/span> reader poll, nearly one-third (32.5 percent) of
\nassociations get their inspiration for new ideas from their executive director
\nor board. No surprise there, but nearly as many (27.2 percent) of the 151 respondents
\nto our latest online survey told us that anyone at the organization can submit
\nideas. That\u2019s a trend that\u2019s really picking up steam according to many of the
\nassociation leaders we\u2019re profiled over the past year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly one in four (22.5 percent) associations still rely on tried and true senior
\nmanagement meetings or retreats and nearly 18 percent still start with
\ndepartment heads meeting with teams. But, the move toward an all-inclusive
\nideation culture should help associations gain relevance with their members,
\nparticularly younger members and staff.<\/p>\n

“We
\nhave a very collaborative atmosphere here and I rely very heavily on my team,”
\nrelated Julie Coons, president and CEO of the Electronic Retailing
\nAssociation. “I\u2019m very open to new ideas, and I have very smart people around me
\nwho each know more about their areas of expertise than I do.”<\/span><\/p>\n

So how does ERA know when it has finally hit on the right idea?<\/p>\n

Actually,
\nthere is no one “right way,” noted Coons. “I encourage my team to pick a
\nsolution they think will work. I just want to be assured they\u2019ve thought it
\nthrough with data so that if it doesn\u2019t work out the way we planned, there\u2019s
\nvery little collateral damage.”<\/span><\/p>\n
