But if you think you&#8217;ve been getting more text, tweets, updates and posts than ever before, you\u2019re not alone. According to our latest unscientific reader poll, 72 percent of respondents (up from 65 percent in 2013) believe that at least 10 percent of members will <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> be using email as their primary online communication tool by 2019. In fact, 28 percent of respondents (vs. 12\u00a0percent in 2013) think that <strong>more than half<\/strong> of their members will not be email regulars within the next half decade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/AA-Nov-2014-No-Email.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3452 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/AA-Nov-2014-No-Email.jpg\" alt=\"Five years from now, what percentage of your members will no longer use email as their primary form of online communication?\" width=\"475\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/AA-Nov-2014-No-Email.jpg 475w, https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/AA-Nov-2014-No-Email-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNot only is membership skewing younger each year, but our research shows that more than half (54 percent) of <em>Association Adviser eNews<\/em> followers say they are either texting or planning to text members within the next 12 months. A <a title=\"Boston Globe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2013\/03\/29\/mail-gets-cold-shoulder\/xWOVx0s9h8EXVs8t6MxrmO\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Globe<\/a> report found that for many people, especially the young, Twitter, Facebook and other social networks have messaging systems built in that replicate the direct\u2013and private\u2013contact email provides. Unlike email, experts say social networking more closely resembles the natural flow of conversation, which adds to its immediacy and appeal.<em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For corporate users, enterprise networking solutions from IBM, Salesforce.com and Yammer, for example, are like virtual workplaces that combine the functionality of multiple programs, from email to logistics to content production. In these closed networks, employees can share files, show work in progress, and have personal and group conversations or communications using text, pictures or live video, without switching back and forth among multiple programs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it\u2019s not all cutting-edge technology that\u2019s eating into email. <strong>Frank Rudd\u00a0<\/strong>of the <a title=\"FSAE\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fsae.org\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE)<\/a>\u00a0and Rita Chen Fujisawa of the <a title=\"CAHF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cahf.org\" target=\"_blank\">California Association of Health Facilities<\/a> (see today\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/rita-chen-fujisawa\/\">Corner Office profile<\/a>) said faxing is making a comeback, especially at organizations whose members are not \u201cearly adopters\u201d of technology.
