I\u2019m sure you&#8217;ve all heard the battle cry &#8220;join the conversation&#8221; in reference to participating on a social media channel. Well, in today\u2019s business world, there are many ways to join the conversation. Some new and some not-so-new:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2502 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/02\/Tweetables-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Tweetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"65\" \/><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 90%; margin: 5px; background-color: #dcdcdc; border: 1px solid black;\" cellspacing=\"3\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"border: 1px solid black;\">\n<ul>\n<li>There are more ways than ever to have a dialogue with your members, but in order to be effective, you must have a moderator.<\/li>\n<li>A moderator is essential for keeping the conversation going and ensuring that it stays on track.<\/li>\n<li>As in all aspects of life, you get back what you give online. If you expect strong participation from your readers and followers, you have an obligation to respond to their comments ASAP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Social channels. <\/span>Hashtags, such as the one we use, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/#AssocAdviser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#AssocAdviser<\/a>, are a popular choice among the Twitter set. &#8220;Posts&#8221; and &#8220;likes&#8221; fill Facebook walls and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups?mostRecent=&amp;gid=2912729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn pages<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Video.<\/span> Products like GoToMeeting\u2014or Google+ Hangouts for those on a budget\u2014have made &#8220;face-to-face&#8221; possible for groups no matter where they are in the world. And, of course, webinars and Association TV are other popular tools for delivering online education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Smartphones.<\/span> Texting or text polling (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/index.php\/incorporating-text-polling-next-live-event\/\">Incorporating Text Polling at Your Next Live Event<\/a> for more on this) have made their way past tweens and teens, and can be utilized in the most professional of settings. Oh, and let\u2019s not forget the ability simply to pick up that smartphone to make a phone call.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Face-to-face.<\/span> In addition to traditional trade shows and conferences, appointment-setting events have become a popular choice for busy professionals. These one-on-one discussions between highly qualified buyers and top suppliers are a great way to extend the conversation between longer show cycles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Blogs and websites. <\/span>Posting and reading the comments at the bottom of the article is sometimes the best part of the story. Sure, you get the occasional spam or aimless rant, but in business-to-business forums, more often than not, you find people just like yourself. People, who work in the field, live and breathe strategy <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">and<\/span> implementation, and who want nothing more than to let others benefit from their experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is one thing that all of these communications have in common. In order to be effective, they must have a moderator. Someone who keeps the conversation going and ensures that it stays on track.<\/p>\n<p>As is the case elsewhere in life, &#8220;you get what you give&#8221; when it comes to engagement and online communications. For example, if you expect to get rampant participation from readers of your blog, you\u2019d better be prepared to respond and carry on a two-way dialogue when someone actually posts a relevant comment. How successful do you think a Google+ Hangout would be if there was not one person guiding the discussion? My guess: Not very successful.<\/p>\n<p>Check out these examples of moderated online discussions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The weekly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nurph.com\/assnchat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#AssnChat<\/a> occurs Tuesdays at 2 p.m. on Twitter.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/International-Carwash-Association-105017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Car Wash Association<\/a> keeps up lively discussions within its LinkedIn Groups.<\/li>\n<li>Naylor healthcare editor Heather Williams moderates the type of content that is pushed out to healthcare association members <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/HMcCole\/status\/481096764712550400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through her Twitter account<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Society can\u2019t live without technology and online communications, but don\u2019t forget the most important part of the conversation: YOU. So, what\u2019s your favorite way to communicate with your members? Do you moderate the conversations for your association? Do you tweet on behalf of your association? Do you author a blog or newsletter?
