Some represent a completed course of study, and others represent an independent assessment of competence. Association professionals often list both side-by-side on a résumé or LinkedIn profile, assuming employers and clients read them the same way. Adrienne Bryant, CAE, ICE-CCP, Certification Director at the Customer Experience Professionals Association (CXPA), says that assumption doesn’t hold up. It’s a distinction she thinks about daily, both in her own work building CXPA’s certification program and in the two credentials she’s earned herself.

Bryant knows the difference firsthand. Both of her own credentials, the CAE and the ICE-CCP, required her to first prove she was even eligible to sit for the exam—association management experience and 100 hours of professional development for the CAE, three years of credentialing experience for the ICE-CCP—before passing a rigorous, independent assessment. That’s a very different bar than completing a prescribed curriculum, and Bryant argues the gap gets lost when professionals list a certificate-program designation, such as IOM or AAiP, alongside a true certification mark like CAE or ICE-CCP. The two aren’t interchangeable, and treating them as if they are can undercut the credibility they’re meant to build.

In this conversation with Association Adviser, Bryant breaks down how to tell a certificate from a certification, how to decide which one serves your career at a given moment, and what questions to ask before investing time and money into your next credential.

Association Adviser: Certificate programs and certifications are often used interchangeably, but they mean very different things—one teaches to a curriculum, the other verifies competency through an independent assessment. It recognizes completion of a specific educational experience. Certificates of completion, however, are generally better listed in the education, professional development, or certificates section of a résumé or LinkedIn profile rather than as letters after your name. You can and should highlight those accomplishments; just describe them for what they are. A certificate program is education-based: you complete a defined learning experience and receive recognition for that accomplishment. A professional certification is typically voluntary and assessment-based: an independent credentialing body establishes eligibility requirements and assesses whether you have demonstrated defined professional knowledge or competence. Licensure, on the other hand, is government-regulated and may be legally required to practice or use a protected professional title within a jurisdiction.

Those distinctions should influence your investment.

If your goal is developing knowledge or a new skill, a certificate may be appropriate. Does the credential require ongoing maintenance or recertification? Those are characteristics more commonly associated with professional certification.

I would also look at how the issuing organization describes the credential, whether it clearly distinguishes certification from education or training, and whether the program is accredited or aligned with recognized credentialing standards.
