How has that range shaped the way you think about supporting your associations?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shelly Joines:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0incredibly grateful for the depth and breadth of experiences that\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0gained while with Partners. Each organization and department brings with it different strengths\u2014and the reality is that we have an opportunity to pull from those successes and apply it towards\u00a0new programs\u00a0and benefits for all associations we support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That variety\u00a0in\u00a0responsibilities also allows me to view new proposals with a 360-degree perspective and bring better questions up earlier. I understand that a win for any department is a win for everyone.\u00a0So,\u00a0part of that is a teamwork mentality! But it also allows me to ask critical questions\u00a0of\u00a0how these\u00a0new programs\u00a0may positively or negatively\u00a0impact\u00a0various stakeholders\u2014having been in their seats at some point.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Just today, I invited a sponsor to send in a video about themselves to show at our conference, and they were at a loss with what to talk about. Because I support the membership committee and participate in event planning, I\u2019m around for the conversations people are having and know what questions aren\u2019t being answered. That allowed me to help the partner understand their unique selling point within the organization and how to better connect with attendees and members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> <div class=\"box success aligncenter\"><div class=\"box-inner-block\"><i class=\"tieicon-boxicon\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t<em>&#8220;Each organization and department brings with it different strengths\u2014and the reality is that we have an opportunity to pull from those successes and apply it towards new programs and benefits for all associations we support.&#8221;<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AA: Alongside\u00a0your professional\u00a0work,\u00a0you&#8217;ve\u00a0given back to the community, volunteering as an\u00a0alumni\u00a0for your sorority at both the collegiate chapter and national headquarters level, as well as serving as a board member and speaker for FSAE. What prompted you to say yes to serving on \u201cthe other side of staff\u201d in these roles?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SJ:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oddly enough, I barely remember a time when I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0volunteering with Chi Omega or FSAE in some capacity. And the first reason is\u2014because someone personally invited me to be engaged and shared where I would bring value.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not enough to ask someone to volunteer\u2014you\u00a0have to\u00a0identify\u00a0what the benefit is to them and to the organization\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0serving to be worthy of the time\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0going to\u00a0spend away\u00a0from home, family,\u00a0and work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That said, once I got connected, I found so much purpose in giving back and helping others. I realized that so much of my success\u00a0was\u00a0because someone took the time to break down processes\u00a0to\u00a0me, shared solutions, and encouraged me. It was never a question of\u00a0if\u00a0I would continue to pay that forward\u2014it was just a question of how.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But I think the breakthrough for me (and\u00a0perhaps why\u00a0I continue)\u00a0was\u00a0that I became a more confident professional when I started teaching and leading others. I realized I have a great arsenal of experiences and knowledge to share,\u00a0and\u00a0distributing\u00a0that is only reinforcing those decisions for the future\u00a0so that I can be faster,\u00a0nimbler, and more prepared.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"box success aligncenter\"><div class=\"box-inner-block\"><i class=\"tieicon-boxicon\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t<em>&#8220;<span data-contrast=\"auto\">I realized that so much of my success was because someone took the time to break down processes to me, shared solutions, and encouraged me<\/span>.&#8221;<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AA:\u00a0You&#8217;ve\u00a0mentioned learning a lot in the last two years about how and when\u00a0communications are\u00a0most effective. Can you walk us through what that shift looked like,\u00a0and\u00a0how the experience of being a volunteer changed things?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SJ:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I had a LOT of significant changes from fall 2024 through today: serving as Client Account Administrator for a national organization and growing them\u00a0year-over-year, taking on increased responsibility for a Florida-based association while simultaneously doing the same for another national organization, all supporting different industries. I also transitioned away from an organization I had poured so much heart into while taking on new program areas I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0yet\u00a0understand.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was easy to feel overwhelmed, and my communication with my team became less frequent and detailed. Then, for some reason, I also volunteered as a Social Chair advisor for Chi Omega. If I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have time before, I certainly\u00a0had\u00a0less now!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But then\u00a0I began mentoring\u00a0a student who was eager to learn, willing to show her work, and consistently kept me updated on her outreach. After several calls, she started\u00a0anticipating\u00a0what I would ask for before I even asked.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s\u00a0when it clicked: I enjoyed working with her because her preparation made our time valuable. Her updates and follow-ups allowed us to have strategic conversations. I got excited again and started bringing that perspective back to my role. I looked for ways to provide more frequent and detailed updates and give my team a more comprehensive view of ideas and opportunities. Changing how I prepared for meetings changed the conversations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By serving as a volunteer, I finally understood how to better serve my team and make us all successful.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"box success aligncenter\"><div class=\"box-inner-block\"><i class=\"tieicon-boxicon\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t<em>&#8220;<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s when it clicked: I enjoyed working with her because her preparation made our time valuable. What has that experience taught you about leadership or mentorship that you didn&#8217;t fully grasp from the staff side?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SJ:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Everyone assumes that the mentee is going to learn from the mentor\u2014that is why you\u2019re there, to bring years of lived experiences and solutions to the next generation in hopes of making the path easier for them, or perhaps to build excitement in a career path.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The reality is that\u00a0in\u00a0every\u00a0well-matched mentor pairing\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen,\u00a0the mentor learns far more! As a mentor,\u00a0I set the tone for meetings, so\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0had\u00a0to learn to adjust my\u00a0communication style\u00a0and\u00a0energy, and\u00a0determine\u00a0when and how to have difficult conversations. All of that has provided a practice ground for how to do the same with my team, committees, members, leaders,\u00a0sponsors,\u00a0and vendors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve\u00a0learned how to become\u00a0more understanding and clear\u00a0with my\u00a0audiences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The reality is that\u00a0in\u00a0every\u00a0well-matched mentor pairing\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen,\u00a0the mentor learns far more!<\/p>\n<div class=\"box success aligncenter\"><div class=\"box-inner-block\"><i class=\"tieicon-boxicon\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t<em>&#8220;The reality is that in every well-matched mentor pairing I\u2019ve seen, the mentor learns far more!&#8221;<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AA:\u00a0You&#8217;ve\u00a0talked about respecting that volunteers have real jobs, families, and obligations outside of the work they do for an association. How has that understanding changed your expectations for volunteers\u2014and your appreciation for the work they do?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SJ:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I see firsthand how I sometimes struggle to\u00a0maintain\u00a0my job, family, gym, hobbies, and volunteering.\u00a0It sometimes can take me a week to give myself time to really sit and focus on a contract or\u00a0proposal,\u00a0so\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0asking the right questions early on.\u00a0But my students are gracious and persistent!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So,\u00a0when I want to give my organizational volunteers\u00a0two\u00a0days to\u00a0respond to an email\u00a0because\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0up against a deadline,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0realized that\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0always realistic. Or if it is\u00a0realistic to me,\u00a0it may not be\u00a0to\u00a0volunteers\u00a0with other priorities.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0learned to buffer deadlines where I can\u00a0and have implemented methods to send\u00a0my\u00a0team reminders.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While association staff are paid for their work and\u00a0make\u00a0projects a priority,\u00a0volunteers\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0always\u00a0live by\u00a0our\u00a0timelines. And that\u2019s ok.<\/span>&#8220;<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AA:\u202fLooking back,\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0a perspective you only gained by stepping into volunteer roles yourself, one you\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0think you could have arrived at by staying purely on the staff side?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SJ:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0extremely easy to go to events and learn from FSAE speakers and presentations,\u00a0just\u00a0as\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0easy to\u00a0attend alumni mixers and connect with old friends. But the growth never really happens there\u2014does it?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s\u00a0a challenge in saying\u00a0\u201cyes\u201d\u00a0when asked to speak publicly at small roundtables or panel discussions at a conference, and when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0encouraged to speak up in the boardroom. Is it fun the first time? Maybe not. But\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0always be proud of yourself for rising to the occasion. Now think for a moment\u00a0about\u00a0how often you ask your volunteers and members to do the same\u2014do they need more support to be successful?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0been intimidating walking into a boardroom of people\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0learned from for over 10 years.
