Jordan\u2019s prescience\u00a0and solidarity with the future.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0Agency-Attention\u00a0Connection<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Simone Weil, the 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-century French philosopher, \u201cattention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.\u201d This is\u00a0an appropriate\u00a0and\u00a0meaningful way to\u00a0characterize\u00a0the admirable dedication\u00a0and\u00a0exceptional participation\u00a0of\u00a0myriad\u00a0voluntary\u00a0contributors throughout the association community.\u00a0Beyond\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0purposeful\u00a0generosity,\u00a0their\u00a0devotion of human attention is\u00a0arguably the\u00a0highest form of responsibility that association contributors can bring to their service. More precious than time, attention is both an applied resource and vital to the ongoing pursuit of intentional learning, including the work of foresight.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Without question, voluntary contributors in associations are\u00a0busier than ever,\u00a0and\u00a0it is important\u00a0for our\u00a0organizations\u00a0to\u00a0show respect and support as\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0strive to make the\u00a0best use of their available time\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0pursuit of\u00a0both\u00a0personal and professional priorities.\u00a0With\u00a0the impact of this decade\u2019s multidimensional turbulence\u00a0still\u00a0intensifying, however, the value of time pales in comparison to that of\u00a0increasingly limited\u00a0yet\u00a0absolutely essential\u00a0human\u00a0attention. Without the sustained focus of irreplaceable human cognitive capabilities\u00a0on\u00a0the most\u00a0critical\u00a0association\u00a0work, the weakening of reflection,\u00a0judgment, and\u00a0decision-making\u00a0will result in a loss of individual and collective agency.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Much more than an applied resource,\u00a0human\u00a0attention is\u00a0also\u00a0the non-negotiable\u00a0foundation\u00a0for\u00a0the enduring pursuit of intentional learning\u00a0required\u00a0to build the capacity for\u00a0anticipation through foresight. Association contributors must devote their attention to\u00a0nurturing\u00a0a robust\u00a0understanding of\u00a0a full range of plausible futures for\u00a0their\u00a0associations so they\u00a0can collaborate to develop\u00a0a shared orientation to\u00a0stewardship.\u00a0Associations must make this\u00a0critical connection between attention and agency\u00a0as they\u00a0prepare\u00a0to confront the profound challenges of\u00a0the 2030s.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In practice, associations can\u00a0bring\u00a0a stronger focus to\u00a0both contributor and organizational\u00a0attention through intention.\u00a0For example, establishing\u00a0a clear agreement\u00a0among association contributors\u00a0on the form, quality, and timing of\u00a0information\u00a0sharing\u2014along with\u00a0defining\u00a0a sensible\u00a0pace\u00a0for conversation and\u00a0decision-making\u2014can help\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0avoid attention fragmentation and increase\u00a0their\u00a0intrinsic motivation for directing attention toward\u00a0association work. Within this process,\u00a0it is critical to\u00a0identify\u00a0and\u00a0reckon with\u00a0orthodox beliefs that\u00a0are\u00a0distractions to human\u00a0attention and detract\u00a0from\u00a0sober\u00a0long-term thinking.
