{"id":10540,"date":"2020-08-28T08:00:14","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T08:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/?p=10540"},"modified":"2020-09-14T14:12:09","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T14:12:09","slug":"innovation-during-times-of-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naylor.com\/associationadviser\/innovation-during-times-of-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation During Times of Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DuncanJWardle?elqTrackId=82298DECE61377D60B91366E7094F7C8&amp;elqTrack=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-targettype=\"webpage\"><strong>Duncan Wardle<\/strong><\/a>, former head of innovation at Disney and founder of iD8 &amp; innov8, shared with attendees how we can spark creativity and open the door to innovative thinking. He explained in Wednesday\u2019s fast-paced and engaging keynote that there are five barriers to innovation:<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">1. We don\u2019t have time.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">2. We\u2019re risk averse because we have quarterly results to meet that leaves us thinking in the short-term.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">3. We\u2019re product-centric and not focused on our consumer.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">4. We have too many layers of approvals.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">5. We all have different definitions of innovation and fail to speak the same language.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">Think of what kids do better than adults: They play, are curious and honest, use their imaginations, and ask \u201cwhy?\u201d over and over again. That type of creative thinking, Duncan said, is under attack from a young age, Duncan said, which is why adults are often better at strategy, planning, critical thinking and analysis. Both styles of thinking, however, are required in an innovative process.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">As adults though, how can we practice creativity when it\u2019s not our natural tendency? \u201cCreativity is a muscle; the more you use it, the better you get it,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><\/div>\n<div data-lineheight=\"1.5\">People and groups often have their own ways of thinking &#8211; rivers of thinking &#8211; that are deep, fast and one-way based on our experiences, but we can get out of those rivers of habit if we actively change our perspective or the questions we ask, including:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><strong>Ask, \u201cWhat if?\u201d <\/strong>Every industry has rules, so metaphorically break those rules. What if \u2026 this weren\u2019t a challenge or that didn\u2019t stand in our way? Then reimagine your industry, product, service or organization without those rules in place.<\/li>\n<li data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><strong>Include naive experts: <\/strong>This person may not have experience or expertise in your field, but they are an authority in an area you\u2019re seeking to learn more about or they have a new perspective to your thinking. \u201cIf they don\u2019t look like you, they don\u2019t think like you. And if they don\u2019t think like you, they can get you to think differently.\u201d<\/li>\n<li data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><strong>Ask \u201cHow else?\u201d<\/strong> Give yourself permission to reframe how you look at things and even the words you use, like how Disney refers to its customers as guests or its employees as cast members.<\/li>\n<li data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><strong>Follow your intuition: <\/strong>While most days we do get buried thinking about meeting quarterly or annual goals, real innovation happens when we stop to think how might we attack the biggest pinch and pain points and take away major barriers to success.<\/li>\n<li data-lineheight=\"1.5\"><strong>Be curious:<\/strong> We are creatures of habit &#8211; we eat the same foods, sleep on the same side of bed and drive the same route home day after day &#8211; but being curious creates new stimuli for our brain.
